What if you lost the remote control for your TV? Simple. You just plug an old telephone to the box and dial the channels!

Seriously, the final assignement for the seminar Introduction to Interface Technologies (at the University for Design in Linz) was building an interface to control a video play list. When I found this 70 years old telephone in my cellar, Gregor and I decided to hook it up to an Arduino board, use Max/MSP to read the fork and dialing disk functions from the phone, run them through a selector routine and a sound generator (yes, it even has the original  line and message tones!) and finally, into the video player to output the designated video file. You can then listen to the audio using the telephone ear piece or the additionaly connected head phones. Numbers are six digits, each refering to a video file.
Huge thanks go to Gregor - without him this wouldn't have been possible. Thanks man!

So far, this is the basic setup which can be seen at our exhibition in the University main building (Hauptplatz, Linz) opening April, 28th. Here are some more pictures...
